Today marks the extinction of the Pinta Island tortoise (a Galápagos tortoise, native to Ecuador), as at 8am this morning, June 24, 2012, the director of the Galápagos National Park announced that Fausto Llerena found Solitario Jorge, “Lonesome George”, the last known member of the species, dead in his habitat; Fausto had been his caretaker for the past forty years.

I think I heard they also called him lonesome because he wouldn’t mate with anyone. But all in all, this is quite sad....
